EON BANK INCITING INDUSTRIAL UNREST

Unprofessional conduct and ill-treatment of the lowest paid employees by EON Bank is further unveiled.   Apart from its recent inhumane transfers of 8 NUBE members from Malacca to Johor, EON Bank has been repressing, abusing and utterly exploiting its employees.

This was revealed through the hundreds of grievances filed by NUBE members nationwide. Until last Friday, 10.7.2009, we received over 200 grievances from the various EON Bank branches.  Amongst the complaints received, the bank’s act of repression, exploitation and violation of human rights are evident as in:

·         Non-payment of overtime payment, constant harassment to serve customer’s within 3 minutes, depriving performance bonus to the lowest income group which is an average of 2 months for the last two years whereas top management gets an average of 10 months per year. EON Bank is widening the gap between rich and poor in this country.

·         The most unreasonable; imposing conditionals on guarantee letters.  When employees seeking medical treatment apply for letters of guarantee, a condition in this letter of guarantee is to sign a consent authorizing the treating doctor to reveal the member’s ailment including medical records; prior medical history with copies of all records to the bank.  If the employee refused to consent, admission and/or treatment is denied. Doctors too are also facilitating the bank’s request in violation of their ethics of medical practice and an intrusion over the employee’s right to his/her personal information.   NUBE allowed the practice of issuing guarantee letters with the sole intention to enable members to obtain admission and/or treatment without any disruption.

·         Further, atrocities are the subjecting of employees to seek approval for medical leave despite the bank’s doctor declaring them unfit to work.  In seeking this approval the employee must reveal his/her sickness and treatment obtained before the said medical leave is approved and the publishing the employees medical leave numbers on the salary slip, deliberately done to traumatize employees.

EON Bank seems to be bold in escalating its actions and is ignoring calls to reconcile.  NUBE is concern over such blatant actions that are absolutely confrontational to the Prime Minister’s vision of 1Malaysia envisaging the principle of equal treatment and justice for all.    NUBE fears the actions of EON Bank if left unchecked tantamount to inciting industrial unrest.

We urge Bank Negara Malaysia to play a role in ensuring the right persons to lead bank’s Human Resource Division so as to ensure proper human resource practices are in place and manpower are treated with dignity and respect and industrial harmony  in the Financial Sector is maintained at all time.
