How can we tolerate Maybank's Brutality against NUBE members ?

Around 200 NUBE members marched with their leaders to the office of Suhakam on 5th Aug to deliver the memorandum.

This is the first time a trade union has lodged a complaint with SUHAKAM against one of its employer.

The blatant violation of trade union and human rights by Maybank in attempting to stifle unionism and its activities is a violation of fundamental workers rights.

Before handing over the memorandum the General Secretary J Solomon gave an overview of the complaint to the Commissioner Mr. James Nayagam listened attentatively by a hall filled with members of NUBE and reporters.

"If Maybank gets away with this it will attract the foreign banks to follow suit which will bring disaster to Bank workers in Malaysia," says J Solomon.

General Treasurer Chen Ka Fatt an employee of Maybank during his speech condemned the action of Maybank where he was also a victim of the bank's brutality.

Further a member of the National Executive Council Chee Yeeh Ceeu said, " After 7 years in the Bank I am sad and shocked that my employer has used the security guard to manhandle me for no valid reason."

Mr. James Nayagam requested NUBE to furnish all documented evidences and any video clips to substantiate our complaints which will ease their investigation.

NUBE General Secretary spontaneously replied that they have all evidences documented to prove their claims and will be forwarded to the Commissioner soon.

"I assure you that Suhakam will call the parties concern and investigate the complaint" said James with an applause by all members who were present in the hall.

When the memorandum was officially handed over to the Commissioner he commended NUBE for creating awareness to SUHAKAM and was concern on the brutality of a Government linked company.

NUBE had to report to Suhakam since there was no immediate action taken by the authorities such as Ministry of Human Resources and the police.

The assault on Union officials, obstructing functions of Union officials , deducting officials salaries and threatening with show cause letters and intimidating NUBE members from participating legitimate Union activities are among others which requires immediate action. Maybank has further discriminated pregnant women which is a direct violation of the Convention of Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against women.

NUBE is confident that Maybank will stop its brutality with the intervention of Suhakam otherwise the Malaysian government will be seen violating the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as pledged.
