When COVID19 vaccination was launched in February 2021, we did urge the Government to expedite vaccination for essential services – bank workers.
At that material time, out of desperation, COVID-19 vaccination seemed to be the only hope. Even the social and mainstream as well as the Government promoted vaccination.
Over the past six months, sadly, several bank workers contracted COVID-19 and passed away despite being fully vaccinated. We also lost family members and friends to COVID-19 despite the vaccination.
At the same time, we know many are safe without getting vaccinated. They strictly adhere to the SOPs and focus on boosting their natural immunity. We listened to their concerns and respect their decision not to choose the vaccination.
Now, we are fully aware that COVID-19 vaccine cannot always prevent the infection. Vaccinated persons can get infected and infect others as well. The Ministry of Health has also acknowledged this. The Government also did not make COVID-19 vaccination mandatory, and it is reported that the Government does not intend to do so.
Based on these factors, the claim that non-vaccinated workers will jeopardise the health of vaccinated workers is an incorrect and a baseless claim. The assumption that vaccination is the solution is no longer a credible fact. In fact, the logical fact is that whether vaccinated or not, one can still be infected by COVID-19 and can infect others.
Despite this, in the last 2 weeks we received reports that some ill-considered banks took the position that only vaccinated workers are to report to work. Unvaccinated workers are told to stay home.
So, our advice to members who choose not get vaccinated is to comply with the directed by your bank and stay home until they come to their senses. Your colleagues will respect your choice and understand that it is the bank’s irrational directive to you to stay home.
If your overzealous managers/officers harass you for not opting for the vaccination instead of questioning the irrational directive of the management, report them to you NUBE Branch Secretaries and they will guide you accordingly.
We respect your decision against the vaccine. It is your basic human rights and no one can deny you the right to do so. NUBE is consistent with our principles that no member should be discriminated based on their opinion, especially one which concerns their life and that of their family.
UNITED WE STAND; DIVIDED WE FALL
Stay strong, stay safe, strictly adhere to the SOP and build you natural immunity.
By God’s grace we will overcome this challenge together.
