It was followed by a discussion session by four panelists namely Alex De Silva, partner at Bodipalar Ponnudurai De Silva, who covered the title "The Constitutional Safeguards for Trade Unionism"', Ravi Neeko touched on "The Impact of Amendments to the Labour Laws on Trade Unionism in Malaysia ", Sdr A Sivanantahan, trade union and industrial relations practitioner, who spoke under the title "The Role of Industrial Relations Practitioners in the Trade Union Struggle" while Sis A Karuna, Assistanr General Secretary of NUBE, spoke on the theme "The Struggle of Trade unions Within the Current Legal Framework".
The forum themed "Fight For Social Justice: NUBE's Legal Advances", was moderated by Bro Michael Tan, President of NUBE while Sdra Naveen Joshua Solomon was the master of ceremony.
The General Secretary of NUBE, Bro J Solomon said, this forum was held as a sign of commemorating the contribution of the late Alfred Balamohan Vengadasalam, who was one of the legal advisors for NUBE.
"The late Alfred has made a very valuable contribution in strengthening NUBE's struggle in terms of the legal framework.
"The aspect of legal advice is one of the aspects that build the struggle of trade unions.
"So, NUBE decided that we need to appreciate the contribution and role of legal advisers," he said and added that "this legal advisory group is often forgotten during Labor Day celebrations."
Therefore, he said, these individuals have helped NUBE and in the trade union struggle, and need to be appreciated during Labour Day celebrations.
"So, this year's program is held specifically to remember their role...we should respect our history, don't forget the services of legal practitioners," said Solomon.
More than 200 NUBE members from all five branches made the forum a success this time. Leaders of trade unions were also present including President of UNI-MLC, Datuk Mohamed Shafie BP Mammal, former MTUC President, Syed Shahir Syed Mohamud and SBEU General-Secretary, Catherine Jikunan.
