The HSBC Bank’s atrocities and blatant violations of the Laws of Malaysia and International Labour Standards were highlighted to our members by our previous circular.
In view of anti-union discrimination and harassment by the HSBC against the members, NUBE having sought the intervention of MTUC, reported such violations to the Director General of ILO for urgent intervention.
Based on the complaint and the gravity of violations, the ILO has within a short period of four days after receiving our complaint has directed the Government of Malaysia to immediately intervene to stop forthwith all forms of vindictive actions and to bring about a settlement to the dispute without delay.
Letter from ILO addressed to MTUC is attached.
Needless to emphasise that ILO has rightfully realised the seriousness of the violations by the HSBC which would have necessitated its immediate intervention. We record our appreciation to the ILO for its immediate intervention.
On behalf of the Director General of ILO, the Chief, Freedom of Association Branch has assured their commitment to follow up with the government about the progress of its intervention process and ensure the status quo restored without delay.
We are yet to see the Malaysian Government to act on the direction of the ILO. Malaysia being a constituent member of ILO is obliged to ensure that no employer flouts our domestic Laws and International Labour Standards and that the unions and workers are not subjected to anti-union discrimination and harassment.
We shall keep our members updated on the development as our industrial action continues.
