Comrade President, General Secretary and members of the presidium.
Let me convey the fraternal greetings to NUBE Malaysia to the 28th Conference of AIBEA.
While congratulating for the success of AIBEA over the 70 years, we are confident looking at this audience, the deliberation throughout the conference will be very successful and useful to the trade union movement.
My General Secretary Bro Solomon was supposed to be attending this conference, consequent to his recent election as Secretary General of Malaysian Trade Union Congress and due to some important involvement he could not be attending this conference from day one. However, since he has vey great respect to AIBEA and especially to Com C H Venkatchalam he will be arriving tonight to mark his presence at this important conference.
Since yesterday I have been hearing many challenges that the Indian trade union movement and the people of India are undergoing at present and in Malaysia too the challenges are not different.
In the Malaysian banking industry, we are also facing challenges such as outsourcing and retrenchment as a result. Digitalization is another challenge which is also another cause for loss of jobs
Job opportunities are threatened and the membership in the union is also constantly declining.
Therefore it can be construed that the aggressive digitalization implemented under the guise of efficiency is an attempt to de-unionize and reduce the bargaining power of the union.
We are also constantly fighting against these challenges in order to protect the job security of bank employees in Malaysia.
Employers use very unethical strategies such as transferring of our members to distant station in order to force them to quit employment.
In the reason past, the Bank Muamalat in Malaysia adopted this dirty strategy and our members who were subject to this injustice steadfastly rejected the banks move and stood firmly with the union to fight the management but the banks arbitrarily terminated their services. Most unfortunately we were unable to get legal remedy for this injustice.
This injustice was in fact caused in violation of the provisions of the collective agreement in relation to transfers.
In that context, we are facing the challenge of not receiving any remedy through litigation and also provisions of the bipartite collective agreement as well
In these circumstances, we strongly believe that coordination among the countries in the region is the upmost important.
In that context we are grateful to AIBEA for having invited us for this conference and maintain that coordination so and creating a ground situation to collectively address these challenges.
It is great pleasure for the 21 Malaysian delegates to be part of this conference and experience the significant events of this conference and we are really inspired and gives us courage to be involved in more and more trade union activities in our country.
Finally, I on the behalf of Nube and the General Secretary Bro J Solomon, thank the organizing committee for the hospitality extended during our stay here and wish you all very success in your deliberation at the conference.
